From Idea to App Store: 6 Stages of Building Your App, Step by Step

6 min readAMC Software Team

How does an idea become an app published on Google Play and the App Store? We explain each stage and what is expected from you.

Many people think building an app just means "writing code". In reality, coding is one part of a longer journey. Knowing the stages helps you follow the project and make the right decisions at the right time.

Stage 1: Discovery and Planning

We sit with you to understand the idea: Who are the users? What problem does the app solve? Who are the competitors? What are the key features for the first version?

Output: a requirements document, a work plan, and a timeline.

What we need from you: clear goals and any examples you like.

Stage 2: UX/UI Design

We map the user's path through the app, then design the screens. The process starts with simple wireframes and becomes a final design with colors, fonts, and identity.

Output: interactive designs you can try before a single line of code is written.

What we need from you: review the design and share feedback. Changing a design is far cheaper than changing code.

Stage 3: Development

The team works on three parts:

  • The app interface on the phone.
  • The server and database (backend).
  • The admin dashboard to manage content and users.

Delivery usually happens in short rounds so you can see progress and try early builds.

Stage 4: Testing

We test the app on different devices and OS versions to check:

  • Every function works as intended.
  • Speed and stability.
  • Data security and payments.
  • Ease of use for an ordinary user.

What we need from you: try the test version and tell us anything you notice.

Stage 5: Publishing to the Stores

Many people overlook this stage, and it needs its own preparation:

  • A developer account on Google Play and another on the Apple App Store.
  • An icon, screenshots, a description, and privacy information.
  • Compliance with both stores' policies. A build may be rejected and need changes before approval, especially on the App Store.

So allow extra time for review before launch.

Stage 6: Launch, Maintenance, and Growth

Launch is the start of the journey, not the end:

  • Monitoring bugs and crash reports.
  • Reading user reviews and feedback.
  • Regular updates to stay compatible with new Android and iOS versions.
  • Adding new features based on how people actually use the app.

How Long Does the Journey Take?

It depends on project size. In general, a first version (MVP) takes far less time than a full-featured app. Starting small may be the most successful way to reach your market quickly.

Tips for a Successful Project

  1. Appoint one decision-maker on your side so instructions don't conflict.
  2. Send feedback on time for each stage.
  3. Avoid adding new features mid-build unless essential. Leave them for the next release.
